Zimbabwe's largest mobile phone operator Econet Wireless yesterday apologised to its subscribers after it sent a message to their phones with a wrong IsiNdebele spelling, torching a storm among some locals.

"Good morning, mangwanani, livhuke (instead of livuke) njani Zimbabwe! Look out for a special good morning treat from Econet. Coming soon!" read the text message.

After receiving a backlash on Twitter, Econet Customer Care on Twitter apologised for the boob saying: "We apologise, we got this one wrong. Thank you guys for the heads up TK."

Disgruntled subscribers has earlier taken to social media and expressed their disappointment over the mistake.

"Zimbabwe's largest and most innovative telecommunications company, and yet you can't type "Livukile" properly in your SMSs," said Eldrick.

The chairperson of the Zimbabwe Indigenous Languages Translators' Forum, Cont Mhlanga told The Chronicle that companies should engage professionals instead of taking shortcuts in coming up with advertorials.

"I nearly slammed my phone on the ground in disbelief when I received the message," said Mhlanga.

National University of Science and Technology's director of communication and marketing Felix Moyo said such mistakes portray disrespect for users of the language.

The executive president of the Public Policy Research Institute of Zimbabwe Samukele Hadebe said Econet should be more thorough in its communication systems.
