A 27-year-old Zimbabwe National Army soldier at Suri Suri air base in Chegutu Mashonaland West is battling for life at Parirenyatwa hospital after he was attacked by ten illegal miners yesterday.
Sources familiar with the incident allege that a soldier identified as Ashley was attacked by illegal miners with machetes and bottles at Western Shops.
"The soldier was attacked by ten Makorokoza around 15:00hours after they accused him of boasting with his salary.
"He was left unconscious and had to be ferried to Parirenyatwa, the thugs went away unnoticed," said the source.
The matter was reported at Pfupajena police base.
Apparently the police were reluctant to attend the scene citing man power shortage.
An eye witnesses who declined to be named said the illegal miners who committed the crime are known but they always bribe cops
"We know the guys who committed the crime but it's pointless to name them because these cops are corrupt."
"In some incidents you see them in these Makorokozas' cars so naming them may cost us our lives.
"The case was reported long back but the scene was attended hours later, "explained the source.
Efforts to contact Mashonaland West police spokesperson were fruitless.
