The United State Embassy in Harare has said it President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) has recently given grants to seven grassroots organizations.
The Embassy said ShamwariYemwanasikana, Exclusive Friend of the Girl Child, is implementing egg production and reusable sanitary pads sewing projects in Seke Rural with one of these PEPFAR grant.
"ShamwariYemwanasikana will support the training of 50 girls and women in bookkeeping, business management, and entrepreneurship. Beneficiaries will also receive training in general hygiene as well as how to make affordable, reusable and environmentally friendly sanitary pads," said the Embassy.
"Beneficiaries will provide some pads free-of-cost to vulnerable communities and sell the remaining pads. Through selling sanitary pads—as well as eggs from 200 chickens - beneficiaries will increase their monthly incomes. Project activities will also reduce the number of girls who miss school due to menstruation."
The Embassy said so far the grant has enabled ShamwariYemwanasikana to purchase sewing machines and material for the reusable sanitary pads sewing project and they will proceed with the projects after the new year
