Chamisa/Khupe split imminent - Mliswa

The 'anointment' of Nelson Chamisa as the head of the MDC-T party may widen the rift between the former and the party's elected Vice president Thokhozani Khupe, says Norton house of assembly member, Themba Mliswa.

Chamisa is fronted to usurp leadership as the current MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai has already put him in charge of key roles within the party. Chamisa now leads the selection process of parliamentary and council candidates for this year's elections.

Although the imminent promotion of Chamisa would give the nation a youthful face, it has a potential to cause a split within the MDC-T.

"Chamisa heading MDC would be a boost for the youth and a force to reckon with," tweeted Mliswa.

"However it may cause a Chamisa/Khupe split which will be negative for the party; YARD supports the youth being given their space and encourages youths to take up leadership roles."

The fissure between Chamisa and Khupe commenced when the youthful leader was made co-vice president of MDC T together with Elias Mudzuri without going to congress.
 
A twitter user, MarkMudzi said: "In concept, the Chamisa/Khupe split, already exists, but is yet to manifest practically, it's only a matter of time."

Analysts assert that a Mudzuri ascendancy might better unite the party which has been bedevilled by splits since its inception. Welshman Ncube and Tendai Biti split from MDC-T and took some key members to form their political parties.

However, the MDC functionaries have united to form an Alliance which stands a better chance to unseat Zanu PF at the forthcoming elections to be held later this year.
