ACTING Officer Commanding Police in Midlands Province Assistant Commissioner Charles Ndoro has warned police officers to be professional and humane when dealing with civilians and suspects.

Addressing members of the police force and Gweru residents during the launch of the Midlands Provincial Police Patrol Unit, Asst Comm Ndoro said police officers should be extremely professional and respect citizens.

The Police Patrol Unit is a special detachment designed to carry out patrols to reduce crime and increase police visibility as well as improving police interaction with the communities.

Asst Comm Ndoro said police officers, who are not committed to serve the nation, must shape up or ship out.

"This is the order I am giving you today as Officer Commanding Midlands Province, go out and patrol your areas so that you make Zimbabwe crime free, peaceful, safe and secure.

"Be approachable, polite, humble and helpful. Always stand ready to assist. Policing needs people of good cheer. Be gracious to the people you will meet on a daily basis as you perform your duties.

"Be the light that shines in the darkness. May the public derive comfort from your presence. Handle people humanely and with dignity. We may not always be with you as you patrol the streets, but police discipline and integrity expects that you will be your own supervisors at all times. Exercise restraint. Be firm, but fair. Do not be heavy handed even when dealing with suspects," he said.

Asst Comm Ndoro said some police officers must not perform their duties selectively.

"The Zimbabwe Republic Police cannot be home to desperate job-seekers. It is a profession of choice and never a last resort for desperate job-seekers.

"Only those who are prepared, ready and willing to discharge all their duties dutifully to the best of their skills and knowledge should remain members of ZRP.

"If there are any such police officers, you now have the opportunity to rethink if you are in the right profession. I tend to get worried when men and women in such a profession are found doing something contrary to what is expected of them," he said.
