Zimbabwe is set to become a regional hub for power equipment manufacturing following Cabinet's approval of a public-private partnership (PPP) between ZESA Enterprises and Chinese firm Shanghai Jingdao Electric Company. The partnership will establish a manufacturing and assembly plant for switchgears, smart meters, and electric vehicle chargers, aiming to meet growing domestic and regional demand.

Speaking during the final Post-Cabinet media briefing for 2025 in Harare, Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Dr Jenfan Muswere, said the initiative responds to the expansion of the national electricity grid and the need to phase out outdated infrastructure. "The country faces a growing need for modern switchgears as the national grid is expanding, while old equipment is being phased out. This partnership will position Zimbabwe as a switchgear supplier in the SADC region," Dr Muswere said.

The Minister highlighted that smart meters produced through the project will enhance operational efficiency at the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), improving billing accuracy and boosting revenue collection. In addition, the manufacture of electric vehicle chargers aligns the country with global trends toward clean energy and sustainable mobility.

Dr Muswere emphasized the economic benefits of the project, including import substitution, foreign currency savings, job creation, technology transfer, improved energy supply, increased ZETDC revenues, and strengthened support for downstream sectors.

During the briefing, Dr Muswere also provided updates on the 2025/26 summer cropping season, reporting positive progress in the planting of maize, sorghum, and pearl millet. Reflecting on the year's achievements, he described 2025 as a period of significant national progress, citing Zimbabwe's successful chairing of SADC and COP15 on wetlands, industrial revitalization efforts, the national football team's qualification for the AFCON finals in Morocco, and international recognition by Forbes as a top travel destination.

Dr Muswere said these milestones underscore the Government's commitment to sustainable growth and inclusive development.
