The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists has marked the commemoration of the World Press Freedom Day amid concerns over the decreasing numbers of female journalists in major newsrooms.
Issues to do with sexual harassment and poor remuneration took centre stage at the commemorations.
According to Zbc some journalists - today - said the welfare of journalists needs to be looked at as a matter of urgency adding that there have been dwindling numbers of female journalists in the industry.
Zimbabwe Union of Journalist's Secretary General Foster Dongozi says journalists are used as a tool of conveying government policies, but they are lagging behind in terms of benefitting from policies such as indigenisation and economic empowerment.
The day comes at a time when government has allowed a diversity of voices in the media through the licensing of more players clearly demonstrating its commitment to ensure that press freedom is achieved.
This year's commemoration comes at a time when the fraternity has lost a number of journalists in the industry, notable among them ZBC's Freedom Moyo, Bornwell Chakaodza and Makuwere Bwititi.
