The leading workers body Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions has called its members to revolt against the 2019 budget statement announced by Minister of Finance Professor Mthuli Ncube on Thursday.
"The poor are not wanted by the Emmerson Mnangagwa and his government. The message was eloquently conveyed by Finance minister Mthuli Ncube on Thursday in his budget statement. The majority are now confined into abject poverty in a country where the USD is the unit of account while workers earn in useless RTGS." ZCTU said in a statement.
The union called for its members to unite and protest against this move.
"Anti Workers, Anti People and Anti poor Budget! Margret Thatcher in charge of Zimbabwe, workers beware. Let us Stand Up in Defence of Our Rights and Interests."
Recently, President Mnangagwa likened himself to the late UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and on Thursday Finance Minister quoted Thatcher saying, "Mr Speaker Sir, to put it in Margaret Thatcher, former British Prime Minister's words, "you and I come by road or rail, but economists travel on infrastructure."
The Mnangagwa administration is posing itself as a follower of Liberal politics of free market economy.
Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe leader Raymond Majongwe criticised ZCTU for issuing incoherent statements from its affiliates.
"Some within the Labour movement are on record supporting the 2%. They are on record saying they support government paying them in bond notes yet they are in the ZCTU opposed to the same. How will the labour movement go forward seriously?
"The ZCTU must come out clean. They cannot house people speaking and standing for the opposite of what the mother body stands for."
Mthuli Ncube's budget which was themed 'Austerity for prosperity' has been received with mixed feelings by Zimbabweans from across the country.
