Eighteen villagers in the Machindu area of Chiredzi have been arrested for fatally assaulting a man they accused of offering food to a suspected cattle rustler.
Masvingo acting provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Charity Mazula confirmed the incident that took place on Wednesday last week and identified the deceased as Lovemore Matsilele (26).
She disclosed that among the accused are two juveniles, aged 16 and 19.
The other suspects are Mukachana Chauke (40), Thembani Jinga (28), Moses Magigwana (25), John Muvango (25), Edward Mugobha (22), Vitalis Chauke (18), Darlington Nyoni (26), a man know as Hlengani (26), Markson Mangovele (26), Elliot Chauke (39), Bornwell Bizirandi (29), Lookwell Chambuta (20), Patrick Muchevere (23), James Pepukai (72) and Latelani Kuzomuka (36).
Asst Insp Mazula said on May 29, Passmore Hlambela (30), the suspected cattle rustler, visited Matsilele at his homestead.
Matsilele's wife, Sibongile Huni, reportedly refused to prepare food for Hlambela, arguing that she could not feed a criminal.
She then packed her bags and headed to her parents' home where she allegedly told other villagers that her husband was harbouring a criminal.
Matsilele followed her in a bid to reconcile, but was accused by fellow villagers of being Hlambela's partner in crime.
It is alleged Mukachana, who is related to Huni, mobilised other villagers and pounced on Matsilele as he walked back home.
The mob is said to have forced marched him to his home where they tied his legs and hands with chains.
Matsilele died the following day due to wounds sustained during the gruesome attack.
A police report was made, leading to the arrest of the 18 who are still in police custody.
They are expected to appear in court facing a murder charge.
