Zimbabwean gets top Unilever Africa job

UNILEVER, one of the world's leading consumer goods companies, has appointed Wellington Chimwaradze as vice president responsible for legal affairs for Africa.
The trained lawyer, who has been with Unilever since September 2015, said the latest appointment is a promotion into the group's general council.
"I will be based in the Unilever Africa hub office in Johannesburg. This is an exciting and challenging role in the top strategic team for the Unilever business in Africa and the Unilever legal functional strategic team globally and a very good opportunity to showcase African talent in a global conglomerate like Unilever," he said.
Prior to his appointment at Unilever, Chimwaradze was involved in internal corporate counsel roles in sectors such as banking and mobile telecommunications, as well as a private law firm practice.
He's also lectured for over eight years in the Faculty of Law at the University of Zimbabwe.
He also spent five years at Barclays Bank of Zimbabwe, now First Capital Bank (FCB) where he was head of legal and company secretary from May 2010.
Unilever sells around 400 brands in more than 190 countries.
In Africa, the group operate in more than 20 countries.
Chimwaradze joined Unilever nearly four years ago as the head legal for the central Africa cluster, which has 16 countries in southern Africa, central and west Africa.
In January 2017, he said, Unilever restructured its Africa clusters and became general counsel for southern Africa mostly Sadc excluding South Africa.
"Then in January 2018, South Africa was added to my portfolio and I became general counsel South and Southern Africa," he said.
