A SOLDIER based in Chipinge was yesterday sentenced to three months in prison for biting and assaulting his father-in-law in a wrangle over his son, whom he tried to forcibly take from his estranged wife.

Clive Guzete (29), of 1966 Gaza O and employed by the Zimbabwe National Army, was convicted on his own plea of guilty to assault before Chipinge magistrate Joshua Nembaware.

However, he heaved a sigh of relief after the magistrate wholly suspended the sentence on condition he would not be found guilty of a similar offence in the next five years.

Prosecutor Shamiso Ncube told the court that Guzete was once married to the complainant, Elijah Mahlanganise's daughter, Melisa, before they separated after siring a son with her.

She then went back to stay with her parents in the same suburb.

On Friday night last week, Guzete went to his father-in-law's house with the intention of taking over the custody of his son.

When he arrived at the house, he summoned his wife, who came together with the son. Guzete then grabbed the son from her, demanding to take custody of him.

The wife, realising that she was being overpowered, called her father and advised him about Guzete's actions.

Mahlanganise then came and tried to engage him, but a misunderstanding ensued.

However, Mahlanganise managed to overpower Guzete and took away his grandson from him.

It was at that moment that Guzete bit him on the left arm and struck him on the mouth with an elbow.

Mahlanganise sustained a deep cut on the mouth. He made a police report, leading to Guzete's arrest.
