Government enforces mandatory blending of fuel

The Minister of Energy and Power Development Jorum Gumbo on Wednesday gazzetted a mandatory blending of Anhydrous Ethanol with Unleaded Petrol.

In a General Notice 740A of 2019 the Minister said:

It is hereby notified that, in terms of Section 4 (1) of the Petroleum Regulations, 2013, published is statutory Instrument 17 of 2013as amended by Statutory instrument 81 of 2014 the Minister approves the mandatory blending to 10 per centum.

The consequence of this approval is that all licensed operators shall from the date of publication of this notice be mandated to sell unleaded petrol which is blended at E10.


Commenting on the development Journalist Hopewell Chin'ono said, "The price of petrol is likely to go up after a Government Gazette order instructing petrol companies to increase the blending of petrol with ethanol from 5% to 10%. Insiders have told me that the ethanol price will be going up by 150% from $1.14 to $3.04."
