A 35-YEAR-OLD Bindura man was slapped with a two year jail term by Bindura magistrate Maria Msika last week for setting his former girlfriend's mother ablaze as a way of fixing the family.
Zivanai Dzingai Mafuro (35) of house number 7784 Aedrome, Bindura pleaded guilty to a malicious damage of property charge before Msika who sentenced him to two years in prison and suspended one year on condition of good behaviour.
Public prosecutor Edward Katsvairo told the court that on November 17 last year around 10pm the accused forced his wife Fozhomina Mashando (29) to his ex-girlfriend's (Abigail Mashave) homestead who stays with her mother Charity Mashave (32) in Glendale as she is still a teenager.
Upon arrival at her house number V-2913 Tsungubvi, Glendale Mafuro asked for the whereabouts of his ex-girlfriend and was told that she had gone to her rural home in Chiweshe and knocked hard on her mother's room who had locked herself inside.
Mafuro threatened to burn the house before breaking the door with an iron bar, fearing for her life the mother together with daughter escaped and sought refuge next door.
The furious Mafuro set the house ablaze while his wife stood guard, Mashave gained courage upon seeing flames and returned to her house which was reduced to ashes and goods worth over 12 000 were destroyed.
Her neighbour Herephani Tizora told her that the duo fled soon after completing their mission.
