The remains of the national hero, Joshua Malinga, have departed from Bulawayo in preparation for his burial tomorrow at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.
The departure occurred at 1:06 PM from the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo International Airport, with the body being transported aboard an Air Force of Zimbabwe aircraft.
In attendance to bid farewell to the national hero were dignitaries including Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Judith Ncube, senior Zanu PF officials such as Retired Colonel Tshinga Dube, Elifasi Mashaba, Molly Mpofu, and members of Malinga's family.
While the body is en route to Harare by air, mourners will make their way to the capital by road later today.
The government has made arrangements for 14 buses to transport mourners to Harare, with four of them specifically allocated for the use of the Malinga family.
Malinga is commemorated for leading an unbounded life and challenging preconceived notions that individuals with disabilities (PWDs) are limited by their physical impairments. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the first black man with a disability to attend Bulawayo Polytechnic College and also the first individual with a disability to assume the role of Bulawayo's mayor.
Beyond his advocacy for the rights of those with disabilities, Malinga was a champion for equal opportunities, particularly for minority groups.
