IN a bizarre incident, a woman is accused of posing as her deceased grandson's mother and orchestrating the removal of his body from the mortuary for a hastened burial, all without the knowledge or consent of the grieving biological mother.
Dropper Makwanza stands accused of fabricating information and assuming the identity of Lisa Mafunga, the true mother of the late Denver Makwanza (14), to acquire a burial permit without Lisa's awareness or approval.
Chief Mutasa, presiding over the matter at his traditional court last Saturday, expressed astonishment and referred the case to Ruda Police Station for criminal investigation, adjourning the proceedings until June 8, 2024.
Speaking on behalf of Lisa, her father, Mr. Peter Mafunga, expressed outrage and devastation at the lack of communication from their relatives regarding the burial. He revealed that they only learned of the burial through hearsay, believing the body was still at the hospital awaiting the arrival of Denver's father from South Africa.
He recounted the emotional toll this deceit took on Lisa, highlighting that it was not the first time such actions were perpetrated by their in-laws. Lisa's emotional testimony mirrored her father's sentiments, expressing profound pain and confusion over the sudden burial of her son without her participation or knowledge of the location.
In her defense, Makwanza disputed the accusations, claiming she had informed Lisa of Denver's passing. She alleged that the Mafunga family demanded a substantial sum of money before agreeing to participate in the funeral proceedings, a claim refuted by Lisa.
Makwanza insisted that they obtained necessary documents, including police and village head letters, to retrieve the body, asserting they followed protocol. She maintained that she did not misrepresent herself as Denver's mother.
Chief Mutasa condemned both families' actions, denouncing the unauthorized burial and the demand for payment to participate in funeral rites. He pledged to thoroughly investigate the matter, emphasizing the need for accountability and adherence to cultural norms regarding burial practices.
