The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) aims to move 2.7 million tonnes of freight this year, a 17 percent increase from last year. However, this figure is still significantly lower than in previous years when the company moved 18 million tonnes of freight annually.

The parastatal's peak in the 1980s saw it employing 17,000 workers and serving as the main transporter for industry both within and outside Zimbabwe. However, employee numbers and cargo volumes have since declined.

NRZ has been adversely affected by a lack of funding, obsolete equipment, vandalism, corruption, and mismanagement. In recent years, it has sought investment from various potential investors to modernize its services and operations.

Investment projects under consideration include the provision of passenger coaches and freight wagons, as well as the upgrading and expansion of the rail system.
