In a night operation targeting undesignated parking, Bulawayo City Council (BCC) impounded vehicles left overnight in various western suburbs, including Emganwini, Nketa, and Nkulumane. The impounded cars were transported to the BCC facility along Khami Road, where they are being held.
Several vehicle owners in Nketa 6, who had parked their cars at a local fuel station, woke up to the surprise that their vehicles had been removed by the council.
According to Mr. Moxen Moyo, owner of a registered car park in the area, some vehicle owners have been bypassing his facility, preferring to park at the nearby fuel station, where a security guard charges R10 overnight. "They've been avoiding our registered car park, which charges US$1 per night, to save money. Now, those who parked at the fuel station found their cars gone this morning," Moyo explained.
One of the affected vehicle owners, Mr. Dumisani Mlilo, shared his experience: "My car was towed in the early hours of Monday, and it's now held at the BCC impound yard on Khami Road. I don't yet know what the release charges will be."
The city council has yet to respond to questions about the operation or details on release fees, but the impoundment underscores BCC's commitment to regulating parking and discouraging the use of unauthorized locations for vehicle storage.
