The curtain has fallen on the 2024 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League season, and Hwange and Bulawayo Chiefs have joined Arenel and Chegutu Pirates in being relegated to the lower division.
Bulawayo Chiefs, who had been part of the top-flight since their promotion in 2017, were handed a 2-1 defeat by Manica Diamonds in their final match of the season, sealing their relegation. Chiefs entered the match in 15th place, just one position above the relegation zone, and the loss ensured they dropped to 16th.
The final blow for Hwange came after Bikita Minerals defeated them 2-0 in their own encounter, ensuring the Chipangano side's relegation to the lower tier. Despite their valiant efforts to survive, Hwange finished the season in 16th position, just below Bikita Minerals, who secured their top-flight status with the crucial win. Bikita Minerals ended the season in 14th place.
Elsewhere, in other fixtures, ZPC Kariba pulled off an impressive 1-0 win over defending champions Simba Bhora, while Dynamos suffered a 2-1 defeat to Greenfuel. In a goalless draw, FC Platinum and TelOne played to a stalemate, reflecting a highly competitive season in the Zimbabwean top-flight.
The relegation of Hwange and Bulawayo Chiefs marks the end of their stints in the premier league for now, and they will be looking to regroup and mount a challenge for promotion in the next season.
