Go Beer Breweries nears revival

Gweru residents are anticipating a brighter festive season with the imminent revival of Go Beer Breweries, which has been dormant for nearly a decade. The Gweru City Council has committed US$2.3 million to resuscitate the brewery, once a vital revenue stream for the municipality.

Gweru Mayor, Councillor Martin Chivhoko, announced that recruitment for Go Beer Breweries has commenced, signaling progress towards operational readiness.

"Yes, Go Beer Breweries has started the recruitment exercise. Interested candidates can submit applications at the brewery located in the light industrial area or apply online," Cllr Chivhoko said.

He added that beer production would begin soon, with infrastructure and equipment already set up. The project is expected to significantly enhance the council's revenue base and improve service delivery.

To support the brewery's operations, the council cultivated 23 hectares of winter wheat at the Go Beer Farm. This initiative aims to reduce production costs and ensure sustainability.

"We aim to produce our own raw materials for the brewery to make the business viable," Cllr Chivhoko said. The brewery targets a daily output of 120,000 litres of traditional beer.

The revival of Go Beer Breweries marks a strategic move to diversify Gweru's income sources. The brewery's closure in 2014 due to financial mismanagement and a US$2.6 million debt left a significant gap in the city's revenue streams.

Following its closure, the council repurposed beer halls into revenue collection points for bill payments. With the brewery's revival, these facilities could regain their original purpose, contributing to the city's economic and social vibrancy.

The brewery's history has been marred by financial struggles and mismanagement. At its closure, the council had invested over US$2 million to settle Go Beer creditors and employee retrenchment packages. Equipment and livestock were auctioned to cover debts, and municipal police conducted investigations into mismanagement, but no individuals were held accountable.

The current revival effort seeks to avoid past pitfalls, with the council actively exploring diversified revenue streams to reduce dependence on ratepayers.

The initiative not only holds promise for economic recovery but also aims to restore Go Beer Breweries as a symbol of local pride and resilience. If successful, this revival could mark a turning point for Gweru's financial stability and service delivery.
