Bulawayo police have urged liquor outlet operators to enhance security measures following a surge in violent incidents, including fatal stabbings, during New Year celebrations. The authorities are particularly concerned about the increasing number of murders linked to disputes at drinking establishments.

Bulawayo acting police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, has called on the public to exercise restraint and avoid confrontations while drinking. "We urge people to refrain from engaging in arguments during drinking times. These situations can quickly escalate, leading to unnecessary loss of life," she said.

One of the tragic incidents occurred on New Year's Day at 7:45 a.m. in Pumula Old. Khulekani Mjaho, 31, was fatally stabbed following a heated dispute over beer with Thembelenkosi Mlotshwa, 29. According to police, Mjaho struck Mlotshwa on the head with an empty beer bottle, prompting Mlotshwa to retaliate by stabbing Mjaho multiple times in the stomach.

Mjaho sustained severe injuries, with his intestines protruding, and was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he later died. Police have since attended the scene and are investigating.

In a separate incident on December 31 at 10:30 p.m., a drinking session in Pumula South ended in violence. A 30-year-old man was stabbed three times in the chest by his drinking companion, Kwaziyena Moyo, 27, after a misunderstanding turned physical.

The victim, who collapsed at the scene, was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. Police arrested Moyo the following day and are pursuing legal action.

A domestic altercation in Pumula Old on December 31 resulted in the death of Master Khabo, 46, after an argument with his wife, Gugulethu Sibanda, 33. The altercation reportedly began when Khabo was seen speaking with a female friend at a local shop, leading Sibanda to strike him on the head with a stone.

Though Khabo initially sought treatment and was discharged from the hospital, his condition deteriorated the following day. Police arrested Sibanda at their residence but found Khabo in critical condition. He was readmitted to Mpilo Hospital, where he passed away on January 1 while in intensive care.

Assistant Inspector Msebele emphasized the importance of proactive measures to prevent such tragedies. "We urge liquor outlet operators to improve security at their establishments to protect lives and maintain peace. Additionally, individuals should seek to resolve conflicts amicably and avoid violence," she said.

Police have reiterated their commitment to investigating these incidents and ensuring justice for the victims. The public has been encouraged to report suspicious activities and to prioritize peaceful resolutions to disputes.
