An elderly woman from Imbesu Park in Ntabazinduna has been arrested for allegedly stealing 17 heads of cattle. Sithabile Ngwenya (71) appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Beverly Madzikatira to face a charge of stock theft, where she pleaded not guilty.
Ngwenya was remanded in custody to January 21, 2025.
The court heard that between August 18 and September 8 last year, Ngwenya, along with Muneyi Ndlovu—who is still at large—stole 17 cattle from Edias Musarira (43). It is alleged that Ngwenya drove the cattle to her plot in Ntabazinduna, where she branded them with the initials "MEXH" on the rear left side using a locally made branding iron.
Ngwenya then reportedly went to the police and veterinary offices to clear the cattle, claiming they were hers. After obtaining the necessary clearances, she hired a truck and transported the stolen cattle to Bulawayo abattoirs in Kelvin West, where she sold them.
The complainant received a report from his herdboy that 17 of his cattle were missing from the kraal. The total value of the stolen cattle is estimated at US$14,000, and nothing has been recovered.
The State is prosecuting the case, emphasizing the gravity of the theft and the efforts made to conceal the illegal activities.
