Authorities have arrested more than 6,500 commuter omnibus drivers, pirate taxi operators, and touts under the ongoing nationwide operation code-named "No to mushikashika, pirate taxis, and lawlessness on the roads." The crackdown, launched on January 9, 2025, aims to restore order and enhance road safety by targeting traffic violations and unauthorized public transport operations.

The operation focuses on motorists who disobey traffic rules, including creating congestion by picking up and dropping off passengers at undesignated points, driving against the flow of traffic, and operating public service vehicles without the necessary permits.

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the progress in a statement.

"On January 19, 383 arrests were made under the operation, bringing the cumulative total to 6,540 arrests since the operation began. So far, 190 touts have been arrested, while 61 unregistered vehicles have been impounded," Commissioner Nyathi said.

The crackdown comes amid concerns over rising lawlessness on Zimbabwe's roads, particularly in urban areas. Reports indicate that approximately 16,500 commuter omnibuses operate in Harare alone, but only 2,950 of these are registered.

The operation has been met with mixed reactions, with some commuters welcoming the move for improving road safety and reducing congestion, while others raised concerns over inadequate public transport options.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring compliance with road regulations and urged public transport operators to regularize their operations. The police also appealed to commuters to use designated transport services and avoid engaging with illegal operators, emphasizing the need for collective efforts to restore order.
