South African police are on the hunt for 34-year-old Dakalo Nemangwele, who is accused of brutally killing his 29-year-old wife in the Free State province on Friday, January 17, 2025, before allegedly fleeing to Zimbabwe for spiritual cleansing.

The suspect is believed to have crossed into Zimbabwe through the Beitbridge Border Post. Limpopo police have recovered ammunition thought to have been used in the killing and are calling for public assistance to locate Nemangwele.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Malasela Ledwaba said the suspect shot his wife multiple times for reasons that are still under investigation.

The case broke when police in Musina received a tip-off from a vehicle tracking company about a white Ford Ranger parked at a residence in Campbell. The vehicle's owner, Nemangwele, and his wife had been reported missing in Gauteng under Moroka SAPS.

Police discovered that Nemangwele had left the vehicle at the property on the night of January 17, claiming he was borrowing cash and intending to cross into Zimbabwe for spiritual cleansing due to alleged workplace issues. Bloodstains and ammunition were found inside the vehicle, along with two empty rifle cartridges, three empty 9 mm pistol cartridges, and other incriminating evidence.

The woman's lifeless body was found on January 22 in the bushes near the N1 highway in Kromdraai, Free State. She had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Investigators believe Nemangwele passed the Verkeerdevlei Toll Gate alone in the vehicle on the day of the murder, abandoning his wife's body at the turn-off where it was later discovered.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Limpopo's provincial police commissioner, condemned the senseless murder and vowed to bring the perpetrator to justice.

“This brutal and cold-blooded killing of a young woman is deeply condemned. We urge anyone with information on the suspect's whereabouts to come forward,” said Lt Gen Hadebe.

Police have called on members of the public with information to contact Lieutenant Colonel Shuhani Rendani at +27 82 414 6683, Crime Stop at +27 8600 10111, or via the MySAPS App.

Authorities suspect Nemangwele fled to Zimbabwe for cleansing by a traditional healer. This cross-border element complicates the investigation, with police collaborating across borders to apprehend the fugitive.

The tragic case has sparked outrage and concern over gender-based violence in South Africa, with calls for justice to be served swiftly for the young woman whose life was brutally cut short.
