The Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) has allocated a substantial budget of nearly ZiG62 million to the City of Bulawayo for its 2025 road rehabilitation programme.
According to the latest council minutes, the bulk of the funds will be directed towards the reconstruction of Matopos Road, while the remaining portion will be used for routine road maintenance across the city.
"The ZINARA allocation for 2025 was ZWG61,986,822 for both routine and periodic maintenance works. The department intended to spend 70 percent (ZWG43,390,775.40) of the allocation on periodic maintenance works (i.e., Matopos Road overlay works) and the remaining 30 percent (ZWG18,596,046.60) on routine maintenance citywide (i.e., pothole patching, crack sealing, and slurry sealing)," stated the council minutes.
Bulawayo's road infrastructure has suffered significant damage over the years, with many roads now beyond their intended lifespan. The funds from Zinara are expected to address some of these critical issues, with a focus on improving both major routes and general road conditions in residential and business areas.
City officials and residents alike are hopeful that the road rehabilitation programme will enhance safety and accessibility while reducing vehicle maintenance costs caused by the poor state of roads.
However, there is growing public concern that the allocated funds may not be sufficient to cover the extensive repairs needed, as Bulawayo, like many cities in Zimbabwe, continues to grapple with aging infrastructure and limited resources.
