Four police officers have been accused of stealing US$57,000 and 2kg of pure gold at an accident scene near Selous, along the Harare-Bulawayo highway, in the early hours of Saturday morning. The incident allegedly occurred around 4 am when the driver of the vehicle, Nobizita Gatawa, was unconscious following the crash.
According to court proceedings, Gatawa had been transporting US$80,000 and 2.16kg of pure gold in his vehicle at the time of the accident. The accused officers, identified as Rudo Tafa, Daniel Mujabuki, and Musekiwa Karimanzira from ZRP Saruwe, along with Thomson Brian Chinyani from ZRP Norton Traffic, appeared before Norton Magistrate Ms. Christine Nyandoro on Tuesday.
The quartet was granted bail at US$150 each.
The court heard that on Saturday, Tafa, Mujabuki, and Karimanzira were informed about the accident and proceeded to their station to pick up Chinyani before heading to the crash site. Upon arrival, they allegedly stole US$57,000 and 2kg of gold from Gatawa's vehicle.
The alleged crime came to light when the officers handed over US$22,500 to Gatawa's father, who had visited the accident scene to check on his son. Suspicious of the discrepancies in the amount, the father reported the matter, prompting investigations.
Thomas Chanakira represented the State in the case. Further investigations are underway.
