Two Mozambican nationals were arrested on Tuesday after they were caught with smuggled bales of second-hand clothes in Mutare's Greenside suburb.
Acting on a tip-off, police operatives from Mutare Central Police Station launched an ambush operation and apprehended Antony Mabote (22) and Anderson Thomas (18) in a bushy area while they were awaiting transportation to Sakubva.
The duo had reportedly smuggled the goods into Zimbabwe through an illegal crossing point near Marymount Teachers' College.
Confirming the arrests, Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka said the suspects were part of a wider smuggling network operating across the border.
"Our officers were already conducting an anti-smuggling operation when they received information about two individuals in possession of smuggled goods," he said. "When police arrived at the scene, the suspects—who were seated on the bales—attempted to flee but were swiftly apprehended."
Police recovered seven sealed bales of second-hand clothing at the scene. The two suspects and the seized goods were taken to Mutare Central Police Station for further investigation.
Authorities have since intensified efforts to clamp down on smuggling activities in the eastern border town, warning offenders that they will face the full wrath of the law.
