The Ministry of Local Government and Public Works has unveiled a landmark housing initiative for Zimbabwe's war veterans, pledging 50,000 fully serviced residential stands through a strategic partnership with property developer Prevail Group.
Announced by Local Government Minister Daniel Garwe, the scheme is aimed at honouring the country's liberation war heroes with decent housing and a secure future, in line with President Emmerson Mnangagwa's vision of inclusive national development.
"Our liberation heroes deserve dignity and security," said Garwe. "This project reaffirms the government's commitment to ensuring no one is left behind. We are mobilising all stakeholders to guarantee its success."
The housing programme, described as one of the largest State-led empowerment efforts for veterans, will offer fully serviced stands complete with roads, water, and electricity infrastructure. The initiative is expected to significantly contribute to Zimbabwe's broader housing delivery targets, while transforming war veterans' lives through sustainable home ownership.
Speaking at the launch, Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Minister Monica Mavhunga said the initiative was about more than land.
"We are building sustainable communities where veterans and their families can thrive," she said, stressing the empowerment aspect of the scheme.
Prevail Group chairperson Paul Tungwarara confirmed that preparations were complete and work was ready to commence.
"We are poised to deliver with speed and efficiency. Our expertise in large-scale projects across southern Africa and the UAE ensures quality infrastructure will be prioritised," said Tungwarara.
Prevail Group, a rapidly growing developer with a footprint in the Middle East and the region, is expected to bring its technical and financial muscle to accelerate the project's nationwide rollout.
Tungwarara recently also launched the Presidential War Veterans Fund with a budget of US$1.5 million, along with a rural housing scheme for war veterans aimed at deepening support for ex-combatants.
However, the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) has called for transparency in the implementation of the programme, citing concerns over past issues of corruption and unfair distribution.
"While we welcome this initiative, past grievances over unfair distribution must not be repeated. A clear, accountable system is critical to ensure deserving veterans benefit," said a ZNLWVA representative.
The government has promised to put in place robust monitoring and oversight mechanisms to ensure that the scheme delivers on its promise of dignity and stability for Zimbabwe's liberation heroes.
