Leading financial advisory firm Bard Santner has extended its corporate social responsibility (CSR) footprint by sponsoring three Zimbabwean golfers with intellectual disabilities who are competing in a prestigious international golf tournament in Macau, China.
The trio - Emmanuel Gutu, Simbarashe Mushayi, and Selassi Chiwisa - departed Zimbabwe to represent the country in a week-long invitational tournament, which began today and runs until June 28. The event, held in the autonomous region of Macau, across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong, is considered the "Champions League" of golf for athletes with intellectual disabilities and draws participation from over 50 countries.
Bard Santner is providing full logistical support, including travel expenses and golf kits, ensuring the athletes are equipped to compete on the global stage.
Bard Santner executive director Tatenda Hungwe said the sponsorship was a natural extension of the company's existing commitment to golf and community empowerment.
"Bard Santner is involved in a number of corporate responsibility initiatives. We launched a corporate golf tournament in November 2024 that will run until November 2025," said Hungwe.
"So when the opportunity arose to support Special Olympics Zimbabwe for this invitational in Macau, we saw it as a seamless fit into our broader golf and CSR initiatives."
The global tournament is organised by Special Olympics, a leading international body that serves athletes with intellectual disabilities, offering them opportunities for sport, inclusion, and personal growth.
Zimbabwe has a history of success at such events. At the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin, Zimbabwean athletes brought home silver and bronze medals in unified golf events, demonstrating both potential and prowess.
Coach and head of delegation Simon Murungweni expressed gratitude for the support, saying it goes beyond just financial backing.
"Special Olympics deals with intellectual disability. Being part of this global competition boosts self-esteem and confidence for our athletes," said Murungweni.
"Bard Santner's intervention means these young athletes can participate at the highest level with pride and dignity."
Since its founding in 1968, Special Olympics has grown into a powerful platform for inclusion through sport. It continues to bridge the gap between communities and people living with intellectual disabilities, although the global need for support remains vast.
The current tournament in Macau is not only a competitive event but also a powerful celebration of diversity, inclusion, and the unifying spirit of sport. Bard Santner's gesture underscores the role of responsible corporate citizens in promoting equity and opportunity across all sectors of society.
Zimbabwe's participation at the event highlights the potential of underrepresented athletes and marks a significant step in the nation's growing reputation in adaptive sports.
