The fight against illegal mining is intensifying as the Sekhukhune District Vala Umgodi Task Team successfully arrested three Zimbabwean nationals during a targeted raid at the Spietskop Mine, portions 6 and 7, in Limpopo province.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Masekela Magoro said the operation was the result of careful intelligence gathering aimed at protecting South Africa's mineral wealth from illicit exploitation.
"In a significant victory against illicit exploitation, the team proceeded to confiscate approximately 98 tons of chromite ore that was abandoned in the area," Magoro revealed.
He emphasized the police's commitment to combatting illegal mining and ensuring that the country's natural resources are preserved for national benefit.
"We call on our communities to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities that threaten our collective security and prosperity," Magoro added.
The Spietskop Mine area has been a hotspot for illegal mining activities, posing threats not only to the economy but also to the environment.
Meanwhile, in another development within the Sekhukhune area, police in Tubatse have launched an extensive manhunt following a fatal shooting incident at Riba-Cross on Friday, June 20.
Authorities responded after two men were admitted to a local hospital with gunshot wounds. The 41-year-old driver, who sustained multiple gunshots to his upper and lower body, was pronounced dead, while his passenger remains injured. Their identities have been withheld pending ongoing investigations.
Preliminary inquiries indicate that the victims were traveling in a taxi association vehicle when they were ambushed by unidentified assailants.
Police are currently investigating the cases as murder and attempted murder, appealing to the public for information that could assist in apprehending the suspects.
The combined operations underline South Africa's resolve to uphold law and order amid challenges posed by illegal mining and violent crime.
