More than 150 delegates from across Africa are gathered in Harare for the Good Deeds Day Zimbabwe Regional Leaders Conference, a landmark event promoting community service, inclusion, and sustainable development. This is the first time Zimbabwe is hosting the conference, which runs under the theme "Inclusive Volunteering for Sustainable Development; Leaving No One Behind."

The two-day event kicked off Monday, attracting leaders from over 40 countries and uniting voices across sectors to share strategies, challenges, and success stories in volunteer-driven development. Organisers say the aim is to build momentum for volunteerism as a key driver of grassroots transformation and resilience in African communities.

Speaking at a press briefing, Good Deeds Day CEO Kaynan Rabino described the conference as an opportunity to inspire change and foster collaboration through volunteerism.

"What we are trying to do in the conference is to learn, share stories, get inspired by each other and bring good ideas back to our countries," Rabino said. "Everything is for the purpose of volunteering and doing good."

Good Deeds Day, founded in 2007, is a global movement that celebrates the power of doing good. This year's global commemorations were held on April 6, and the Harare summit continues that momentum by bringing the African regional conversation into focus.

"This event encourages individuals, organizations, and communities to engage in acts of kindness and service, fostering positive change worldwide," Rabino added. "Coming to Zimbabwe really shows how great this country is already doing in volunteering and doing good."

The event is expected to highlight homegrown efforts by Zimbabwean communities in the fields of education, health, environmental sustainability, and youth empowerment.

Good Deeds Day Zimbabwe southern region coordinator Oswald Chishanga hailed the event as a milestone for the country and a catalyst for expanding the culture of volunteerism.

"I believe in terms of volunteer conferences this is the biggest that this country has actually hosted, so we are so honored," Chishanga said. "Hosting this conference will act as a platform to spread the circles of good in the country and also unpack issues of volunteering."

Participants are engaging in panel discussions, skills development sessions, and experience-sharing workshops aimed at improving the effectiveness and reach of volunteer networks across Africa.

The organisers hope that beyond technical dialogue, the event will spark a renewed commitment to inclusive development and inspire more citizens to take action in their communities.
