The National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) has announced that the country will be sending its largest team in over 20 years to the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships, marking a major return to the global stage.
The eight-member squad features athletes across sprints, hurdles, middle distance, marathon, and field events. NAAZ described the line-up as "a movement of renewal" for Zimbabwean athletics.
"This historic team reflects the diversity of Zimbabwean talent—from the raw speed of the 200m sprinters, to the endurance of marathoners, to the technical brilliance of hurdles and triple jump," NAAZ said in a statement.
NAAZ president Tendai Tagara expressed pride and optimism for the athletes.
"For the first time in over 20 years, we are sending such a strong and sizeable team to the World Championships. These athletes have worked tirelessly to qualify, and their presence in Tokyo proves Zimbabwe is back on the global athletics map. We are confident they will inspire the nation and compete with courage and heart."
The team includes Tapiwanashe Makarawu (200m), Makanakaishe Charamba (200m), Vimbayi Maisvorewa (400m), Ashley Miller (400m hurdles), Chengetai Mapaya (triple jump), and marathoners Isaac Mpofu, Tendoyi Zimuto, and Fortunate Chidzivo.
Zimbabwe will be competing alongside some of the world's top athletes, including Botswana's sprint sensation Letsile Tebogo and U.S. star Noah Lyles.
NAAZ described this participation as a pivotal moment for Zimbabwean athletics, signaling a renewed push for international recognition and excellence.
