Harare – Thousands of members of the Vapostori for ED movement yesterday gathered along Seke Road to conduct cleansing prayers following a spike in fatal road accidents along the busy highway linking Harare and Chitungwiza.

The prayers come in the wake of a tragic crash in which 17 people were killed after a 30-tonne haulage truck collided with a commuter omnibus. Several other serious accidents have also been recorded on the same road this year, sparking safety concerns among motorists and commuters.

Led by Madzibaba Moses Gwasarira, the apostolic sect members said the three-day prayer session was meant to intercede for safer roads while also reminding drivers to exercise caution.

"We prayed here in Chitungwiza for three days and today was our last day," Madzibaba Moses said. "We decided to gather along Seke Road because of the increase in fatal accidents. While we have done the prayers, motorists must still obey traffic rules, avoid speeding, and desist from drinking and driving."

He noted that some sections of Seke Road had become accident blackspots, making it even more critical for drivers to remain vigilant.

The Vapostori 4ED provincial chairperson and Velvet Shrine leader, Madzibaba Owen Chingondi, echoed the same sentiments, saying the cleansing ceremony was meant to reduce fatalities and injuries caused by road traffic accidents.

"It is worrying to note that several people have been killed while others have been injured along this stretch of road. We are praying for change, but transport operators also have a responsibility to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and their drivers properly licensed," he said.

The apostolic group vowed to continue holding similar national prayers as part of their contribution to reducing road carnage in Zimbabwe.
