Global DNA Zimbabwe has disclosed that nearly 60 percent of paternity tests conducted in its laboratories during 2024 returned negative results, highlighting the importance of accurate DNA testing in resolving family disputes and ensuring peace of mind.
Speaking to the press, Nigel Bothwell, a spokesperson for Global DNA, explained that the tests are commonly requested for issues such as child support, inheritance disputes, and personal assurance regarding parentage.
"In 2024 alone, out of all the tests done, 59 percent were negative while 41 percent were positive. These figures highlight how assumptions about family relationships can often be challenged by scientific truth," Bothwell said.
He noted that clients often experience a wide range of emotions upon receiving results, from relief and closure to shock and heartbreak.
"One thing that stands out is how critical accurate and confidential DNA testing is in preserving family dignity and ensuring justice," Bothwell said. "Maternal testing, while less common, is equally important, particularly in situations like hospital mix-ups, immigration cases, or adoption reunions."
Bothwell emphasized that DNA testing is not merely a scientific procedure but also deeply connected to trust, identity, and responsibility within families. He added that Global DNA handles every case with professionalism, empathy, and confidentiality to support families during emotionally charged moments.
"These issues go beyond biology - they touch on real lives and relationships. Our role isn't just about providing results; it's about helping clients navigate the emotional and social implications of the findings," he concluded.
