Zifa to decide Nees fate

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) technical committee will this week convene to review the Warriors' latest performances following back-to-back defeats in the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifiers.
ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi confirmed the development in an exclusive interview with New Ziana, saying he was disappointed by the team's lacklustre showing under German coach Baltermar Brito Nees.
"I want the Warriors to win every game and I was certainly disappointed by the turn of events in Abidjan," Magwizi said, referring to last Friday's 1-0 defeat to Benin.
The loss came just days after Zimbabwe fell 1-0 to Rwanda in Johannesburg, with Gilbert Mugisha's first-half strike proving decisive.
The Warriors have now gone four matches without victory under Nees, who has managed just two wins, six draws, and four defeats since his appointment.
Magwizi, who skipped the Rwanda fixture, said it was up to ZIFA's technical committee, led by Tafadzwa Benza, to make recommendations to the association's board.
"We have a competent technical committee which meets regularly, including through online sessions," Magwizi said. "They will meet this week to review the team's performance in the two games played during this FIFA international break."
The ZIFA boss noted that his administration, which assumed office in January 2025, inherited Nees but emphasised his duty to constantly review the association's operations.
"We inherited the coach. But now I am leader of the whole organisation and I embrace everything in it, including its past. But I must continue reviewing everything in order to make the correct decisions," he added.
Magwizi's comments mark the strongest indication yet that ZIFA's patience with Nees is running out.
The Warriors currently sit on four points in Group C with just two qualifiers remaining, while Rwanda and Benin top the table with 11 points each.
