Shurugwi Town Council proposes 10km radius expansion
4 hrs ago | Views

Shurugwi Town Council has unveiled plans to expand the town's boundaries by 10 kilometres, a move aimed at creating space for orderly housing, commercial growth, and better land management.
Town secretary Archibald Ncube said the proposed expansion would incorporate surrounding farms, including Impali Source, Adare Farm, Little Impali, Terrain, Bethnol, and Magakooshla A and B. Approval from the Minister of Local Government and Public Works is awaited following dialogue with Tongogara Rural District Council.
"The town's mountainous terrain limits developable land within current boundaries, creating immense pressure on peri-urban zones where unplanned developments are mushrooming," Ncube said.
He added that the expansion would unlock new land for housing and commercial development, while plans were also underway to extend the CBD behind Mus Lodge, accommodating landmark projects such as the proposed Shurugwi North Constituency Information Parliament Centre.
Ncube warned that illegal mining, particularly in areas like Impali, continued to derail development efforts. "Mining activities on unoccupied stands not only degrade land earmarked for housing but also create environmental and social risks," he said.
The proposed expansion underscores the council's commitment to structured urban growth and protection of development zones from encroachment, paving the way for Shurugwi's sustainable future.
