A Kwekwe inmate's brief taste of freedom lasted just six hours after he escaped custody, only to be caught while trying to find transport to his rural home in Zhombe.
John Nyika (40), who was already serving 24 months for unlawful entry, was sentenced to an additional seven months by Kwekwe magistrate Mildred Matuvi for escaping lawful custody. Four months of the new sentence were suspended.
The incident occurred on August 4, 2025, at around 2pm while prisoners were fetching firewood at a farm along Chiundura Road under the supervision of Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) officers.
Nyika reportedly asked to relieve himself in a bushy area, before dashing off and disappearing.
Authorities quickly realised he had fled and deployed an intelligence team to track him down. By 8:30pm the same day, the team caught up with him at Senderai roundabout, where he was attempting to board transport to his rural homestead.
Nyika was immediately taken back into custody and later appeared in court for sentencing.
