A 22-year-old student from Mutare Teachers' College narrowly escaped death last week after being robbed and violently shoved out of a moving vehicle by three men.
Manicaland police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident, which occurred around midday along the road to the Golden Peacock Hotel.
The victim, Alice Muyambo of Nyabhara Compound in Penhalonga, had boarded a white Nissan Tiida from Mutare's Central Business District on her way to college. The car was driven by Leslie Munyau (23) of Hobhouse 3, who has since been arrested. His two accomplices, identified as Kudakwashe Muneri and another known only as Denzy, are still on the run.
According to police, Muyambo discovered that her Samsung A02S cellphone had been stolen and hidden inside the vehicle's dashboard.
"She took out her other phone and called the stolen phone and it rang from the dashboard. She then confronted the driver and demanded her phone back. However, instead of stopping, Munyau allegedly accelerated," said Ass Insp Chinyoka.
The situation escalated when the two accomplices allegedly pushed Muyambo into the front passenger seat, flung the door open, and shoved her out of the speeding vehicle. Her left leg was briefly trapped under the car before she fell onto the road.
Two police officers from ZRP Chikanga, who were passing by, witnessed the incident and immediately intervened.
"The officers confronted the three men, who were still in their vehicle, prompting Munyau to throw the stolen cellphone back at Muyambo. His two accomplices bolted from the scene, while the officers arrested Munyau and escorted him to ZRP Sakubva," Chinyoka said.
Muyambo was rushed to Victoria Chitepo Hospital, where she was treated for minor injuries. The stolen cellphone, valued at US$75, was recovered.
Ass Insp Chinyoka commended the swift response of the officers.
"This was a callous act that could have easily cost the young woman her life. The bravery of our officers who intervened prevented the situation from becoming worse," he said.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the two fugitives.
