Two men accused of taking part in the US$176,000 Ruwa house robbery have been arrested after allegedly splurging their share of the loot on property, cars, and household equipment.

The suspects, Remember Gladmore Fadzauone and Tawanda Jabulani Makumana, appeared in court in Harare yesterday facing charges of armed robbery. Another alleged accomplice, Blessing Kennes, is already in custody.

Prosecutors say the gang connived to rob Harare businessman Joseph Maruta in June after he had collected US$181,000 from a farm in Kwekwe as payment for potato seeds. Maruta later went to his girlfriend's home in Springvale, Ruwa, where the suspects allegedly stole US$176,050 in cash, a Samsung S23 Ultra smartphone, and a Derya pistol loaded with two magazines.

Court papers reveal that Fadzauone used part of his share of the money to buy a stand in Crowhill, Borrowdale, where he built a three-roomed cottage secured with a precast wall, solar system, borehole, and welding equipment. He also purchased four vehicles – a Nissan Caravan NV350, Toyota Hiace, Toyota Ipsum, and Honda Fit – and built a four-roomed house in his rural village of Mundirwa, Rusape.

Detectives from CID Homicide arrested him in Beitbridge, where they recovered US$5,300 in cash. During interrogation, Fadzauone confessed to helping Makumana escape to Mozambique, for which he was rewarded with US$7,000.

Makumana admitted to buying a Mini Cooper worth US$1,300, a residential stand in Juru valued at US$1,200, and spending the rest on food and clothes for his family.

The case remains under investigation, with police pursuing other possible accomplices.
