Zimbabwe has been elected to the Council of Administration of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) at the ongoing 28th Congress in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The UPU, a specialised United Nations agency, is the primary forum for international cooperation in the global postal sector. Zimbabwe has been a member of the organisation for more than four decades, demonstrating what officials say is its longstanding commitment to innovation, collaboration, and transformation in postal services.
Zimbabwe will serve on the council under Region 5 alongside fellow African countries Cameroon, Egypt, Ghana, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Nigeria, Seychelles, Uganda, and Tanzania. The body is responsible for shaping policies and strategies that guide global postal governance.
The Ministry of Information Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services, under Minister Tatenda Mavetera, Deputy Minister Dingumuzi Phuti, and permanent secretary Dr. Beulah Chirume, has been spearheading the country's participation in international ICT and postal platforms.
Minister Mavetera described Zimbabwe's election as a diplomatic and strategic victory.
"This is more than a seat; it is a clear recognition of the reverence and respect Zimbabwe commands on the international stage. Member states have affirmed their confidence in Zimbabwe's leadership acumen, its consistency in advancing collaboration, and its commitment to innovation within international organisations," she said.
She added that Zimbabwe remains committed to building "a strong, connected, and inclusive global postal community" guided by President Emmerson Mnangagwa's vision.
