Zimbabwe is expected to receive normal to below-normal rainfall between October and December this year, according to the Meteorological Services Department.

"The monthly forecasts for October, November, and December indicate normal to below-normal rainfall for both October and November, while December shows a likelihood of above-average rainfall," reads the report.

Based on projections of an erratic rainy season - starting dry and improving later — the department has issued a set of preparedness recommendations:

- Water Management: Implement robust water harvesting, conservation programmes, and irrigation strategies to mitigate prolonged dry spells.- Storm Readiness: Develop contingency plans for violent storms, flash floods, and tropical cyclones. This includes pre-positioning emergency resources, clearing drainage systems, and issuing early warnings.- Flood Control: Conduct pre-season dredging and manage dam levels to reduce flood risks.- Health Precautions: Launch disease prevention campaigns, stockpile essential medicines, clear drains, weatherproof structures, promote the use of mosquito nets, and stay informed via official updates.

"The Meteorological Services Department will continue to monitor seasonal climate indicators that influence Zimbabwe's rainfall patterns. Seasonal predictions will be updated monthly, starting at the end of October," the report adds.

Daily weather forecasts and 10-day bulletins will also be issued to reflect any changes.

"A seasonal forecast is a long-term planning tool and does not replace short-term forecasts, which are essential for tracking dry spells, the actual onset of rains, and other short-term weather events," the department cautioned.
