Former Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) leader Nelson Chamisa has been cautioned against framing his political comeback around the 1999 opposition struggles, with critics arguing that Zimbabwe's resistance history predates the formation of the MDC.

The warning was issued by political commentator Charline Chikomo via her X (formerly Twitter) account.

"If President Nelson Chamisa ever considers a comeback, he must avoid the mistake of anchoring the NEW STRUGGLE to what happened in 1999 - a narrow and shallow view," Chikomo wrote. "Opposition in Zimbabwe did not begin with the MDC; it stretches across time, rooted in the enduring IDEA of RESISTANCE, the relentless pursuit of a Zimbabwe defined by JUSTICE, EQUITY, DIGNITY, and true SELF-DETERMINATION."

She traced the roots of resistance back to the Berlin Conference and colonial imposition, arguing that opposition must be understood as a continuum spanning colonial, liberation, post-colonial, and transformational phases.

"Opposition is not 1999 comrades, not leaders, not even him - not party names, colours, or personalities. It is an idea that demands sacrifice, persistence, and courage," she added.

Chikomo concluded by urging Zimbabweans to embrace the mission of transformation as a generational call to resist, persist, and redefine the nation.
