Ngezi Platinum Stars coach Takesure Chiragwi has issued a public apology after assaulting a player during a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match and has stepped down as assistant coach of the Zimbabwe national team.

Chiragwi was seen on camera slapping McDonald Makuwe, who attempted to calm him after he received a red card from referee Lawrence Zimhondi. The incident, captured live, sparked widespread condemnation on social media.

"I wish to sincerely and unreservedly apologise for my regrettable conduct during the match between Ngezi Platinum Stars and Dynamos FC at Rufaro Stadium on Saturday, 4 October 2025," Chiragwi said. "My actions on the touchline were wholly inappropriate and unbecoming of a coach, leader, and representative of our game. I extend my deepest apologies to McDonald Makuwe for the hurt and embarrassment my behaviour caused."

Chiragwi further revealed that he had stepped aside from his national team responsibilities ahead of Zimbabwe's upcoming FIFA World Cup qualifiers to allow disciplinary procedures to proceed without prejudice. "I will cooperate fully with investigations by the PSL and other relevant authorities and accept any outcomes or sanctions deemed appropriate," he stated.

He added, "I remain committed to learning from this incident, rebuilding trust, and proving through my actions that this mistake does not define me."

The apology and voluntary step-down aim to demonstrate accountability and respect for the integrity of Zimbabwean football, while investigations into the matter continue.
