A Bulawayo man's attempt to flee the scene of a fatal hit-and-run ended in public humiliation after local residents chased him down and handed him over to the police.
Gillan Gumbo (48) of Old Lobengula suburb appeared before Western Commonage Magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube, facing charges of culpable homicide. He pleaded guilty and was remanded in custody until 15 October 2025 for sentencing.
According to prosecutor Cathrine Kuzu, the incident occurred on 29 September along a road leading to the Caravan area in Cowdray Park. Gumbo was driving a Nissan Caravan (registration number AHA 1457) when he struck a pedestrian who was crossing the road.
"After hitting the victim, the accused did not stop at the accident scene, leaving the pedestrian lying on the ground," Kuzu said.
Gumbo's attempt to escape was short-lived. Alert witnesses pursued him, caught up, and handed him over to the police.
The injured pedestrian was rushed to Mpilo Central Hospital but tragically died upon admission.
Police have since urged motorists to stop at accident scenes and render assistance, warning that fleeing only aggravates legal consequences.
