The South African government has officially extended the validity of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permits (ZEPs) until 28 May 2027, providing relief to thousands of Zimbabwean nationals living and working in the country.

In a directive issued under Minister's Immigration Directive No. 21 of 2025, the Minister of Home Affairs, Dr. Leon Schreiber, announced the extension in terms of Section 31(2)(b) of the Immigration Act, 2002 (Act No. 13 of 2002).

"I have decided to extend the validity of the Zimbabwean Exemption Permits until 28 May 2027," said Dr. Schreiber in the notice.

The decision follows ongoing deliberations by the Immigration Advisory Board (IAB), which was appointed on 1 April 2025. The Board has been meeting to discuss both immediate and long-term solutions for ZEP holders, emphasizing the need for broader consultations with critical stakeholders.

Pending the conclusion of these consultations, the minister directed that existing ZEPs will remain valid for an additional 18 months after their current expiry date of 28 November 2025.

The extension is expected to provide stability and clarity for Zimbabwean expatriates in South Africa while authorities work toward a sustainable policy framework regarding their residency and work rights.
