Social commentator Setfree Nherera Mafukidze has called on the Zimbabwean government to take a firmer stance against Chinese mining companies operating in the country, citing concerns over human rights violations, environmental degradation, and regulatory impunity.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Mafukidze expressed alarm at the conduct of some Chinese nationals involved in mining, accusing them of exploiting Zimbabwean land and communities without accountability.

"The Zimbabwean government seriously needs to be firm with some of the Chinese nationals who appear to do as they please in our country. As someone who now lives in a foreign land, I can confidently say that what I see the Chinese doing in Zimbabwe is something I would never even dream of doing in another country, no matter the circumstances," he posted.

He warned that the unchecked activities of foreign investors risk undermining Zimbabwe's sovereignty and social cohesion.

"There are limits to what is acceptable in a sovereign nation, and Zimbabwe must begin to enforce those limits. In many parts of the country, the Chinese have taken over land and mining concessions that once belonged to Zimbabweans. Instead of developing these areas responsibly, some have degraded the environment, displaced local communities, and disregarded labour laws with impunity."

Mafukidze also criticised regulatory bodies for failing to uphold the rule of law.

"It is as though the law ceases to exist when certain foreign investors are involved. If this continues unchecked, Zimbabwe risks igniting a serious rift between local citizens and these so-called investors. Tensions are already high in areas where mining is involved, and without proper regulation, these tensions could easily spiral into violent conflict."

He stressed that foreign investment must not come at the expense of Zimbabwean dignity and safety.

"No nation should allow its people to be pushed to that point by the careless actions of outsiders who show little regard for its sovereignty or citizens. Our government must begin to act like it truly represents the interests of the Zimbabwean people. While foreign investment is necessary and welcome, it must never come at the expense of the dignity, welfare, and safety of locals. Investors should be held accountable to the same laws and standards that apply to everyone else."

Mafukidze concluded by urging authorities to protect Zimbabwe from exploitation.

"Zimbabwe is not a playground for exploitation; it is our home and our government must protect it as such."
