A four-year-old girl from Mandinyenya village in Bikita, Masvingo province has died after reportedly consuming poisoned rice, in what police say was an act of revenge linked to a local dispute.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed that the victim, Sabina Maziva, passed away on October 5, 2025, after allegedly being fed poisoned food by her neighbour, Violet Gamera (60). The alleged attack stemmed from a long-standing feud in which Gamera accused Maziva's parents of allowing their goats to stray and destroy her crops.
Gamera, along with Chamunorwa Kwanga (60) and Regina Tavengerarwei (30), have been arrested as investigations into the suspected murder continue.
"Initial investigations reveal that on 1st October 2025, Violet Gamera allegedly gave the victim poisoned rice as an act of revenge against the child's parents," ZRP National Spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said.
"The child later began vomiting and was referred to a local clinic, where she received medical attention. Unfortunately, her condition continued to deteriorate, leading to her death on 5th October 2025."
The case came to light during the child's burial, when villagers raised suspicions of poisoning. Chief Ziki instructed the child's mother to report the matter to police, prompting a formal investigation.
Police say Gamera implicated Kwanga as the person who advised her to poison the child, while Tavengerarwei allegedly supplied the poisonous substances. Authorities have recovered rat poison and a liquid suspected to be a cotton pesticide, believed to have been used in the attack.
The child's body has been exhumed and taken to Silveira Mission Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Commissioner Nyathi urged the public to resolve conflicts peacefully and through lawful means, warning that criminal acts of revenge have serious and often tragic consequences.
This shocking incident highlights the dangers of unresolved local disputes and the urgent need for community mediation and awareness in rural areas.
