The ruling Zanu-PF party has directed the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs to begin legal processes aimed at extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office by two years, effectively allowing him to remain in power until 2030.
The resolution was adopted at the party’s annual national conference in Mutare, where members instructed that the process be completed by October next year. The move signals a decisive step toward altering the current constitutional term limit, which would otherwise see Mnangagwa’s presidency end in 2028.
Reading the resolutions, Zanu-PF Secretary for Justice Ziyambi Ziyambi said the conference had further directed that the party accelerate the provision of vehicles and motorcycles to all party leaders, citing the need to strengthen grassroots mobilization and logistical capacity.
The conference also urged the government to "deploy ideologically grounded cadres in the civil service", a move seen as part of a broader strategy to align state institutions more closely with ruling party interests.
If implemented, the proposed term extension would mark a significant constitutional and political shift, potentially reshaping Zimbabwe’s leadership trajectory ahead of the next general elections.
