Police in Shamva have launched a manhunt for five armed robbers who raided a local mine, stealing cash, mobile phones, and a quantity of elution liquid - a chemical used in gold processing.
The robbery, which occurred recently, targeted five miners who were on-site when the gang struck. After the attack, the suspects reportedly discarded the stolen mobile phones in the mine's guardroom, where they were later recovered by police. A toy gun, believed to have been used to intimidate the victims during the heist, was also found at the scene.
Mashonaland Central deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Lucy Chigwenhese confirmed the incident, saying investigations were underway.
"We are investigating a case of robbery in Shamva where five armed suspects robbed victims of their cellphones, money, and a liquid chemical used in gold processing," Chigwenhese said.
She urged members of the public to assist authorities with any information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
The incident adds to a growing number of mine-related robberies reported across the province, raising concerns over the safety of miners and the need for increased security at mining operations.
