The fight against crime cannot be won by the police alone but requires the active participation of communities, Officer Commanding Harare Province, Commissioner Maxwell Chikunguru, has said.

Speaking at an event to celebrate the appointment of Commissioner Nathaniel Madzivanyika as the new board chairperson of the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC), Comm Chikunguru said community partnerships were vital in reducing crime and promoting peace.

He commended Comm Madzivanyika for his leadership as chairperson of the Harare Crime Liaison Committee (CLC), which has played a crucial role in curbing crime in the province.

"Crime prevention must be a shared responsibility; it cannot rest on the shoulders of the police alone," said Comm Chikunguru. "As we celebrate him today, let us also celebrate the spirit of togetherness that binds us all. Dedication, service, and unity are always rewarded."

Comm Chikunguru praised Comm Madzivanyika for his unwavering commitment to safety, describing him as a man who demonstrates "an unshakable hatred for crime and an inspiring love for those who work tirelessly to combat it."

He also highlighted the importance of community-driven initiatives such as the Christian Community Police Network, the Police Junior Call, and the Business Against Crime Forum, which operate under the CLC.

"These initiatives show how much can be achieved when the community and law enforcement work hand in hand," he said. "To those who threaten the safety and security of our people, we say firmly: there will be no tolerance."

Comm Chikunguru added that Madzivanyika's appointment to the national SRC board was not only a personal achievement but also a reflection of his consistent service and integrity.

"We believe this promotion to national office is a divine reward for Commissioner Madzivanyika's dedication, entrusting him with the opportunity to serve our nation more broadly through sport and recreation," he said.

In his remarks, Comm Madzivanyika expressed gratitude to colleagues, business leaders, the church, and his family for their unwavering support.

"To my fellow commissioners, esteemed colleagues and dear friends from the world of business, the church, and my loving family, your support, guidance, and love have been my north star, inspiring me to reach for excellence every day," he said.

He also thanked Comm Chikunguru and the organising team for putting together what he described as an "unforgettable experience."

"You've shown us what it means to work together towards a common goal," he said. "I look forward to working closely with the Sports and Recreation Commission team to achieve great things for Zimbabwe."

Comm Madzivanyika's appointment has been widely welcomed as a recognition of his long-standing service both in policing and community development.
