A family bira ceremony in Nyika Village, under Chief Maranda, turned deadly after three brothers allegedly murdered their sibling during a dispute over the traditional ritual.
The victim, Takesure Gwezuva (41), reportedly supported holding the bira, a Shona ceremony aimed at communicating with ancestors, while his brothers opposed it. The confrontation escalated on October 18, 2025, at around 2 PM, according to Masvingo Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Dhewa.
Police reported that during the ceremony, Taona Gwezuva (45) and Sheunesu Gwezuva (29) restrained Takesure, while Coleen Gwezuva (42) allegedly struck him on the head with a large stick. The blow caused a severe head injury, leaving Takesure bleeding and unconscious.
He was rushed to Mwenezi District Hospital around 3 PM but succumbed to his injuries the following day.
Inspector Dhewa confirmed that the three accused remain at large and appealed to the public for any information that could aid in their arrest.
"Investigations are in progress, and we appeal to members of the public for any information that may help us arrest the three," he said.
The incident has highlighted the potential dangers of family disagreements over traditional practices, with a ceremony meant to foster unity tragically ending in irreversible loss.
